ChatGPT Ads: your golf club can now advertise inside AI answers.

Since August 31, 2026, any business in Germany can book ChatGPT ads directly. What OpenAI’s sources confirm, and whether getting in early pays off for golf clubs.

What are ChatGPT Ads, and when could advertisers in Germany start booking them?

ChatGPT Ads are labeled ads shown below an AI answer to users on ChatGPT’s free plans, matched to the topic of their conversation. After a US pilot in February 2026, the platform launched in 31 European countries on August 24, including Germany. Since August 31, businesses there can book ads themselves through the Ads Manager.

The pace is remarkable: 203 days passed between the first US test and self-service in Germany. In its announcement of August 31 (accessed September 3, 2026), OpenAI cites an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion in under 200 days, tens of thousands of advertisers, and more than 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users. The Europe announcement (accessed September 3, 2026) adds the detail that matters most for course operators: geographic targeting and custom audiences are available. In other words, you can target your catchment area.

How does an ad inside an AI answer work?

The system matches submitted ads to the topic of the ongoing conversation. If someone asks how to get into golf in their area, a labeled ad from a relevant provider can appear below the answer. The answer itself stays untouched: according to OpenAI’s policies, ads don’t influence responses, and advertisers get no access to chats.

The difference from Google is the moment. On Google, someone types three words. In ChatGPT, they explain their plan, their criteria, their doubts. OpenAI describes ChatGPT as the place where decisions take shape (Europe announcement, accessed September 3, 2026). For a golf club, that means the ad doesn’t meet a keyword. It meets a fully spelled-out need: “I want to start, I live in X, I don’t have much time.” Safeguards are documented: no ads for minors, and none next to sensitive topics like health or politics (test announcement with updates, accessed September 3, 2026).

How much does advertising in ChatGPT cost?

There is no public rate card. As with Google, prices are set in an auction, and you book on a CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized oCPC basis through the Ads Manager. What’s missing entirely are industry benchmarks: nobody can credibly tell you today what a golf club click in ChatGPT costs. Anyone who claims otherwise is guessing.

Two numbers are circulating from the platform itself, and they deserve the right label when quoted. OpenAI reports an e-commerce advertiser with a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner for whom more than 80 percent of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers (announcement of August 31, 2026, accessed September 3, 2026). These are the platform operator’s own figures on selected cases — not independently verified benchmarks, and not golf data. They show the direction, not your numbers.

So the honest starting framework for a club looks like this. Treat a limited test budget as a learning budget. Set up conversion tracking properly from day one (OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API — the same discipline as with Google Ads for golf clubs). Target your catchment area. And compare the results against your own Google Ads cost per inquiry, not against platform success stories.

Does being a first mover pay off for a golf club?

Getting in early buys you three things that get expensive later: your own data before benchmarks exist, presence in decision moments where hardly any competitor advertises, and a learning lead in a channel that is only now getting its rules. The honest price: you pay the tuition that latecomers save, with a budget that comes with no guaranteed results.

The case for getting in early: The ad appears exactly where someone spells out their decision. You can hardly get closer to conversion than that. Geo-targeting makes a club’s catchment area reachable. Then there’s competitive density: in the golf niche, ad inventory is likely still thinly contested. That is a hypothesis, not a confirmed figure, because auction data isn’t public. But the logic of every young platform points that way, and whoever tests early finds out first.

The case against: Only Free and Go users see ads. Paying ChatGPT users are out of reach, and nobody knows how large the ad-eligible share is in your catchment area. There are zero golf benchmarks, so every budget decision is an experiment. And without clean measurement (Pixel/CAPI), you burn money without noticing. That applies even more here than on Google, because there is no industry experience to correct you.

My take as a consultant: being a first mover pays off for clubs that meet two conditions — a real growth goal with available test budget, and a website that tracks inquiries properly. If you have both, you are buying that rare moment when a new channel is still undervalued. If you are missing either one, build the foundation first. The channel isn’t going anywhere. The head start is.

What about free visibility in ChatGPT?

Ads are the fast route into the AI answer. The lasting route is ChatGPT recommending your club on its own because your content is worth citing. Together they make up the real strategy: ads for the moment, verifiable content for the long run.

I can say from my own measurements that the organic route works. Golfancy content has already been cited in AI answers; for example, ChatGPT used pricing information from my Hamburg indoor golf guide (in German) as a source [Source: own visibility monitoring, structure audit August 6, 2026]. The mechanism behind it is the same one I used to map the Hamburg golf market: structured facts, open sources, data you won’t find anywhere else. AI systems cite what can be verified. A club that works both angles shows up in the answer AND in the ad below it.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT Ads — quick answers.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?+

Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. According to OpenAI, the paid plans Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education remain ad-free. Users under 18 are excluded, and so are ads next to sensitive topics like health or politics.

Do the ads influence ChatGPT’s answers?+

No. According to OpenAI’s ad policies, ads don’t influence the answers. Ads are labeled “Sponsored” and visually separate from the answer. Which ad appears depends on the topic of the conversation, not on the content of the answer.

Can an individual golf club book ChatGPT Ads directly?+

Yes. Since August 31, 2026, self-service access through the Ads Manager has also been open in Europe, with sign-up at ads.openai.com. OpenAI explicitly names small and medium-sized businesses as a growing share of its advertisers.

How much does advertising in ChatGPT cost?+

There is no public rate card. As with Google Ads, prices are set in an auction. You book on a CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized oCPC basis. Golf industry benchmarks don’t exist yet, and that is exactly part of the first-mover calculation.

For club operators

The channel is new. The discipline isn’t.

Whether it’s ChatGPT Ads, Google Ads or organic AI visibility, the winners are the ones who measure cleanly and learn early. If you want to know whether your club is ready for a first-mover test, that is exactly what I assess in an initial call.
