Starting golf: what it really costs.
From a taster course to your own set of clubs: real prices from golf facilities in and around Hamburg, a sample of classified ads and how it all started for me.
How much does it cost to start golf?
Getting to your Platzreife (Germany’s golf proficiency certificate) with your own used set of clubs costs around €388 in Hamburg: €19 for a taster course (what three facilities charge), €259 for the Platzreife course and €110 for a used complete set with bag. The last two are medians from my survey of September 28, 2026. Playing rights on the course come on top after that.
I deliberately keep the numbers small, the way getting started can actually look: try it out, take a course, practice with rental clubs, and only then decide how much golf you want in your life. For each of these steps, I collected prices from the websites of the Hamburg facilities and from a sample of classified ads.
- €19 Taster course
- €259 Platzreife course (median)
- €110 Used set with bag (median)
- = €388 to your Platzreife

Prices according to the websites of the facilities and retailers, or asking prices on kleinanzeigen.de, accessed September 28, 2026. Platzreife and club set: medians, not averages; taster course: the price at three of the eight facilities checked. The current offer always has the final word.
How did I get started?
My first contact with golf was neither a course nor a club. In New Zealand, I worked as a kitchen hand in a hotel. After work, I swung the clubs with a very good friend and a few drinks, just for fun. The photo above is from that time.
I only got my Platzreife later, as a student. The university subsidized the course, and the clubs were rentals from the club. I didn’t need clubs of my own for it. When I see today that 20 of 31 Platzreife courses in and around Hamburg include rental clubs in the price, I know this path is just as open to you.
Is golf really that elitist?
Getting started is more open than its reputation. According to the association of club-free golfers (VcG), Germany has more than 400 public golf courses where you play without a club membership, usually even without the Platzreife, and around Hamburg a day on the practice facility costs between €5 and €20 at the four facilities I checked.
This openness is often misunderstood. When people think of club membership and the Platzreife, they are thinking of a round on the full course. For your first swing there are three routes open to everyone: the driving range, public courses and indoor simulators.
The trend doesn’t fit the cliché either. As of September 30, 2025, the German Golf Association (DGV) counted 695,617 golfers registered at its member facilities, 1.3% more than the year before, spread across 721 facilities in Germany. The 19- to 40-year-olds grew faster than average in every sub-group, and DGV president Claus M. Kobold sees “a growing social breadth of golf”. Playing without a home club is common too: the VcG had 33,412 members at the end of 2025, around 12% more than a year earlier (German golf facilities association BVGA). All figures accessed on September 28, 2026.
Driving range: a day fee instead of a membership
On the practice facility you pay a day fee as a guest, the range fee. This is what four facilities around Hamburg charge according to their price lists:
- Golf-Club Gut Grambek: €5 per person per day for the driving range, 3-hole short course and putting green (source)
- Golf Resort Adendorf: €10, young people and students up to 25 €5 (source)
- Schloss Lüdersburg: €15 day range fee for guests (source)
- Green Eagle Golf Courses: €20 for the day ticket, students up to 27 €10 (source)
Range balls come on top: at Adendorf and Green Eagle they cost €2 for 26 and 20 balls respectively. Whether a facility requires the Platzreife for the range is up to the facility. A quick call before your first visit settles it.
Public courses: pay and play
The VcG describes public courses with the motto “Just pay and play!”: no membership needed, usually shorter holes than on championship courses, ideal for first experiences. Around Hamburg there are such courses right next to the big layouts:
- Green Eagle states that its public 6-hole par-3 course can be played without the Platzreife and without a tee time. The day ticket including the range costs €38 Monday to Thursday, €19 for students up to 27 (price list 2026).
- Golf Resort Adendorf: public short course, 9 holes Monday to Friday €25 (source)
- Schloss Lüdersburg: 4-hole public course, €15 for guests (source)
Whether Adendorf and Lüdersburg require the Platzreife for their short courses is not clear from their price pages. Ask them briefly before you go.
Indoor: book a simulator, show up, play
The threshold is lowest in the simulator. None of the ten indoor facilities in Hamburg requires the Platzreife, a DGV card or a membership, and most providers lend clubs for free. Prices and addresses are in my indoor golf guide for Hamburg.
Golf can get expensive, no question: a full membership around Hamburg costs a median of €1,440 a year. But that is not where golf begins. It begins with a bucket of balls, a short course or an hour in the simulator, just as it did for me with a few swings after work.
Where can I try golf in Hamburg without spending much?
Two facilities just outside Hamburg offer taster golf for free, and six more charge €19 to €19.90. At Golfclub Siek/Ahrensburg, equipment is provided according to its website; at Golf Club Großensee, all you need is comfortable clothing and sports shoes.
- Red Golf Quickborn: free, taster golf (Source)
- Golfclub Bad Bramstedt: free, every 2nd Saturday, 12:00–14:00, no registration needed (Source)
- GolfRange Hamburg-Oststeinbek: €19, taster course (Source)
- Golf-Club Gut Grambek: €19, taster course (Source)
- Golf Club Großensee: €19, taster course (Source)
- Golfclub Siek/Ahrensburg: €19.90, 60 minutes with a PGA coach, equipment provided (Source)
- Golfclub Königshof Sittensen: €19.90, 120 minutes (Source)
- Golfclub Sülfeld: €19.90, taster golf (Source)
I checked every detail on the facilities’ websites on September 28, 2026. Dates and group sizes are listed there. If you’d rather start without depending on the weather, Hamburg also has ten indoor facilities with simulators.
How much does the Platzreife cost in Hamburg?
A Platzreife course at the Hamburg facilities costs between €99 and €449; the median across 31 courses checked is €259. 20 of these courses explicitly include rental clubs in the price.
The cheapest options are the Flex-Platzreife at Golf-Club Jersbek (€99, rental clubs and balls included) and the course at GolfRange Hamburg-Oststeinbek (from €99). If you’re a student, look out for student rates: at Fairway Peiner Hof, the course package for school and university students up to age 27 costs €199 instead of €259, rental clubs included. Some courses come with a first step into club life: Golf Club St. Dionys lists €199 including a two-month trial membership, and Golfclub Hamburg Gut Waldhof a flexible group course for €179 with a trial membership. Clubs aren’t included everywhere: at Golf-Club Hoisdorf, rental clubs cost €20 extra.
All 31 courses with scope and price are listed in the Hamburg Platzreife comparison. How the course and the exam work is explained in my guide Platzreife: the German golf license.
Which golf clubs do I really need as a beginner?
Fewer than you think. The Rules of Golf allow up to 14 clubs in the bag, but five or six are enough for your first rounds, and you can get them used for under €100.
The 14-club limit is set out in Rule 4 of the official Rules of Golf (R&A, accessed September 28, 2026). My advice: start with a half set. A wood or hybrid for the long shots, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter. That gets you down every hole, and you really get to know each club instead of guessing among 14. Beginner sets are built the same way: the INESIS First at Decathlon comes with six clubs and a bag for €179.99.
Buying used is much cheaper. On September 28, 2026, I went through all 49 listings for “Golfschläger Set” (golf club set) within 50 km of Hamburg on kleinanzeigen.de. After removing wanted ads, kids’ sets, duplicates and listings without a price, 39 offers remained, with a median of €90. 11 of them were complete sets with a bag: from €25 to €450, median €110, 5 of them under €100. These are asking prices, often open to negotiation.
What I look for when buying used: right- or left-handed, a men’s or women’s shaft, a length that suits your height, and grips that don’t slip. Very old sets from collections look nice, but for learning I’d go for a more recent set. And if you’re unsure, ask your pro during the course before you buy.
How much does golf cost after the Platzreife?
After the Platzreife, you need playing rights, and there are affordable ways in. At Golfclub Hamburg Gut Waldhof, membership is free until December 31, 2026, according to its website; at Gut Wulfsmühle, a three-month trial membership costs €289.
If you don’t want to play every day yet, a weekday option often works well — at Schloss Lüdersburg, for example, €700 a year for Monday to Thursday. A full membership in and around Hamburg costs a median of €1,440 a year, as my analysis of the fees at 29 clubs shows. If you’d rather play here and there as a guest, 9 holes on a weekday cost a median of €50; all prices are in the green fee overview. To play as a guest, you usually need a membership in a golf club, and a distance membership (Fernmitgliedschaft) is often the cheapest way to get one.

For club operators
Beginners are your pipeline.
Do you run a golf facility? People who want to start golf look for a taster course, a price and a date. Facilities that show all three clearly, and make them bookable, make the first step easy. That’s exactly the path I build with clubs.
A golfer, not an operator? You’ll find every facility with its course data in the Hamburg golf course directory.
